Repair or Replace? A Simi Valley Technician's Honest Guide

Repair or Replace? A Simi Valley Technician's Honest Guide

One of the most common questions we hear at Simi Valley Appliance Repairs is: “Is it worth fixing, or should I just buy a new one?”

After 14 years and over 18,500 repairs, here’s the framework we use to give honest advice.

The 50% Rule

If the repair costs more than 50% of what a comparable new appliance would cost, replacement usually makes more sense. But there are important exceptions.

When to repair even if it’s expensive:

  • The appliance is a high-end brand (Sub-Zero, Miele, Wolf) where replacement costs $5,000+
  • The appliance is less than 5 years old
  • The problem is a known, one-time fix (like a compressor under warranty)

When to replace even if the repair is cheap:

  • The appliance is over 12 years old and showing multiple issues
  • Energy efficiency of newer models would save significant money monthly
  • Parts are discontinued or on extended backorder

Average Appliance Lifespans

Here’s what we see in the field — not manufacturer claims, but real-world numbers from the Simi Valley area:

Appliance Average Lifespan Notes
Refrigerator 10–15 years High-end brands often last 20+ with maintenance
Washer 8–12 years Front-loaders tend to need bearing work around year 8
Dryer 10–14 years Usually outlasts the washer
Dishwasher 8–12 years Water quality in Simi Valley can shorten this
Oven/Range 12–18 years Gas ranges tend to last longer than electric
Garbage Disposal 8–12 years Depends heavily on what goes down the drain

Real Cost Examples from Our Recent Jobs
